Exploring Jewish Identity through Art

“For as long as there have been a Jewish people, there have been questions about what it means to be a part of the Jewish people.”

I am extraordinarily grateful to have experienced a very innovative exploration of these questions in “Authenticity and Identity,” an art exhibit house in Adas Israel Congregation here in Washington, DC. The exhibit features over 70 artworks from over 40 artists–but no criteria were given for the kind of Jew the artists had to be to enter their art, as long as the art focused in some way on the questions of Jewish identity and authenticity.

What resulted is a stunning collection of some of the biggest questions of Jewish identity: assimilation, conversion, extermination, secularism, religiosity, gender, sexuality, and more.
