Book Review: The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Yellow WallpaperThe Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This short story was incredible. The even tone was chilling and I highly recommend. This was initially published in 1899, and yet so many of the themes remain relevant and hold true, especially in today’s climate of uncertainty surrounding women’s rights. My version of this book has an afterword by Elaine R. Hedges as well (published in 1973), that was almost as good as the short story itself. Hedges’ astute understanding of the mindset of Gilman was illuminating. I would love to see an afterword of the afterword some day and trace the threads of feminism from the pre-first wave when Gilman first put pen to paper, second wave with Hedges’ response over seventy years later, and now with a contemporary response deep into the third wave.
